ABOUT
ME
Lauren Berry is a sophomore Health Management major from the south side of Chicago, Illinois studying at Howard University. During the last years of her father’s life, he developed bipolar depression. A disorder that caused him to have episodes of mood swings ranging from extremely depressive lows to manic highs. Her father, like many other people with mental disorders, was in denial and didn’t actively seek out the help that he needed which drove him to the point of suicide. There is such a large number of individuals who have mental disorders but will never be diagnosed or receive treatment. Every day, almost 2,200 people in the world commit suicide, and in 90% of suicides, mental illness is the attributing cause. With funding for mental health services decreasing, and the stigma being ignored, statistics involving mental health are bound to become worse. She believes that It is important that there are people actively fighting to lower these statistics.
