A great number of the black men in our community have been told to “Man up” throughout their child development. As a result there are a number of men who not only associate help with weakness but don't understand their own feelings. Being taught to suppress can strip away the willingness to vocalize and acknowledge emotions that have been deemed unfit for the stereotypical black male. This event will strive to highlight how the preconceived notion that men cannot feel hurt or express emotion, prevents Black men from seeking and receiving help.
MAN UP
Without the knowledge of one’s own self worth, people can slip into depression, fall short of their potential, or constantly feel the need to compare themselves to others. By becoming self aware, you are able to become in control of your emotions and behaviors. Through this heightened awareness it can become easier to interpret your thoughts and emotions and figure out what your true feelings and motivations are. Without self awareness, it can be very difficult to steer your thoughts and emotions in a healthy direction. Becoming self aware is the first step on the journey to not only acknowledging that you need help, but finding the best you. It will allow you to be true, strong, and loving towards yourself and each other.

RELEASE
Letting go gives us freedom. It can be difficult for some to release old resentments, hurt, grudges, regrets,or suffering because as a society we numb out and distract ourselves with social media, tv, and other external vices. For others it might be as simple as the constant distraction we are in every day is not allowing us to be aware of what is going on. Stop, and release past limitations to make room for the endless potential that you have.
RESTORE
In most cases, you are the only one stopping yourself from receiving healing. It is up to you to decide that enough is enough. As a collective we must stop being complacent with the things we aren’t satisfied with in our lives. Combat the negative thinking that often accompanies pain and regain self-confidence and trust in yourself. Not only is it important to name what you want to release, but name what you want to achieve and manifest it.

REJECT
A lot of people struggle in silence with mental health due to the fear of being judged. Keeping mental illness hidden isn’t only harmful to those suffering, but is harmful for those who don’t understand mental illness. If the subject remains taboo, the stigmatizing, name calling and unfair labels will continue to exist. It is up to us to create a space where we can speak our truth without the external pressure of appraisal.

REDEFINE
A great number of people in the Black community have been told to “Man up” (problematic term in itself) throughout their child development. As a result there are a number of individuals who not only associate help with weakness but don't understand their feelings. Being taught to suppress can strip away the willingness to vocalize and acknowledge emotions that have been deemed unfit for the stereotypical black being. The preconceived notion that we cannot feel hurt or express emotion, prevents Black individuals from seeking and receiving help. It is our responsibility to redefine the limitations surrounding mental health.
